North Carolina Deer Season 2026–27

North Carolina's 2026–27 deer season opens in waves, east to west. Gun season has been open in the Northeastern and Southeastern zones since October 17. The Central zone and the Northwestern CWD Management Area open for gun on Saturday, November 14, 2026. The rest of the Northwestern zone follows on November 21, and the Western mountains open last, on November 28. Every zone closes the same day, January 1, 2027. All dates come from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) 2026–27 season dates.

What's New in the Northwest CWD Counties

This season, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes and Yadkin counties open one week earlier than the rest of the Northwestern zone: blackpowder on Oct. 31 and gun on Nov. 14. NCWRC made the change to help manage chronic wasting disease, according to its 2026 announcement.

Doe Days in the Mountains

Everywhere east of the mountains, antlerless deer are legal on every day of every season. The Western zone is different, and it depends on the county.

  • Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Madison, Mitchell and Yancey: antlerless all season.
  • Buncombe, Henderson and McDowell: antlerless all of archery and blackpowder, then Nov. 28 – Dec. 5 with a gun. Parts of Buncombe and Henderson are open for does all season.
  • Cherokee, Clay, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain and Transylvania: antlerless during archery, Nov. 21–27 with blackpowder, and on opening day of gun season, Nov. 28, only.
  • Graham: antlerless during archery and on Nov. 21 with blackpowder only. No does with a gun.

Bag Limits, Reporting and Hunter Orange

The season limit is six deer: two antlered and four antlerless. That limit comes from the NCWRC deer rule. Button bucks count as antlerless. In cities that take part in the urban archery season, bonus antlerless cards allow more does that don't count against your limit.

Before you move a deer, validate your report card, or do it in the Go Outdoors North Carolina app. Then you must register the harvest online, in the app, at 800-446-8663 or with a wildlife service agent. According to the NCWRC harvest reporting page, you have to do it before the deer is skinned or dressed, left unattended, or handed to someone else, and no later than noon the day after the harvest.

During any deer firearms season, every deer hunter must wear hunter orange visible from all sides, no matter what weapon you're carrying. That includes bowhunters on Sundays during gun season. According to NCWRC, a landholder and their spouse and children hunting their own land are exempt.

Youth Deer Days

Hunters under 16 can take either sex with any legal weapon on two sets of youth days. The statewide youth days were Sept. 26–27. In the Western zone, youth also get Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after, Nov. 26–27, 2026, the weekend before gun season opens there.

When Is the Rut in North Carolina?

North Carolina's rut runs about five weeks from the coast to the mountains, and the seasons are set to match it. According to the NCWRC estimated peak conception map, updated in 2025 from 1,776 does, the average peak by zone is:

  • Southeastern: Oct. 31
  • Northeastern: Nov. 8
  • Central: Nov. 15
  • Northwestern: Nov. 25
  • Western: Dec. 5

That means Central zone hunters open gun season the same weekend their rut peaks, and the mountain rut lands in the first week of gun season there. NCWRC notes that peak breeding barely shifts from year to year because it's driven by day length, not weather or the moon. For the full picture across the South, see our Southeast deer rut dates guide.

Planning Around Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is Nov. 26, 2026. Gun season is open that week everywhere except the Western zone, where it's still blackpowder until Nov. 28 and youth have the holiday. If you're traveling for the holiday, check our Virginia deer season guide, Tennessee guide and Thanksgiving week hunting guide.
