Southeast Deer Rut Dates 2026: When the Rut Peaks in Florida, Georgia, Alabama & South Carolina

Bucks are on their feet across the Southeast right now, but the rut doesn't hit every state, or even every county, at the same time. A buck in coastal South Carolina may already be chasing does while a buck in west Alabama won't get serious until late January. This guide puts the 2026 peak rut timing for Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina in one place, using each state wildlife agency's own breeding and movement data, so you know where to be and when.

Quick Answer: When Is the Rut in the Southeast?

State Typical Peak Earliest Areas Latest Areas
South Carolina Last two weeks of Oct. – first two weeks of Nov. Lower coast, Oct. Upstate mountains, late Nov.
Georgia Most counties early to mid-Nov. Southeast coastal counties, mid-Oct. Southwest corner, late Dec.
Alabama Mid-Nov. to early Feb., depending on region East Alabama (Zones D & E), Nov. Southwest Alabama, late Jan. – early Feb.
Florida Varies more than any other state South Florida (Zone A), July – Aug. Panhandle (Zone D), Jan. – early March

These are averages from agency research, not a promise for any single day. Some does always come into estrus early or late, so watch what's happening on your own ground.

Where the Rut Is Happening Right Now (Late October)

  • South Carolina: Most of the state is in or near peak. SCDNR says about 83 percent of does breed between Oct. 6 and Nov. 16.
  • Coastal and southeast Georgia: Counties like Chatham, Bulloch, Effingham, and Ware peak around Oct. 20–26, according to the Georgia DNR rut map.
  • North and central Florida (Zone C): Much of the zone breeds in September and October, with some areas running into November, per the FWC breeding chronology study.
  • Alabama and the Florida Panhandle: Still early. Bucks are rubbing and scraping, but peak breeding is weeks to months away.

Florida Rut Dates by Zone

Florida has the widest rut of any state. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has collected breeding data since 2009 and has documented deer breeding in every month except May, "from July in southern Florida to February in northwest Florida."

Georgia Rut Dates by Region

The Georgia DNR rut map shows peak deer movement by county. University of Georgia researchers and state biologists found a strong link between deer-vehicle collisions, conception dates, and GPS-tracked deer movement, so the map uses collision data to estimate when deer move most. A few examples from the county map:

  • Earliest: Telfair County, Oct. 13–19
  • Coastal and east Georgia: Chatham, Effingham, Bulloch, Richmond, and Columbia, Oct. 20–26
  • Metro Atlanta and much of the Piedmont: Early to mid-November, for example DeKalb Nov. 3–9 and Cherokee Nov. 10–16
  • Northeast mountains: Rabun, Stephens, and White, Nov. 24–30
  • Southwest corner: Decatur, Dec. 8–14, and Seminole, the latest at Dec. 22–28

Georgia's statewide firearms deer season opened Oct. 17, so gun hunters across most of the state are heading straight into peak movement.

Alabama Rut Dates by Region

Alabama has one of the latest ruts in the country, and it changes a lot from east to west. The Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) rut map was built from herd health data biologists collected from 1995 to 2019, and its peak rut bands run from Nov. 10 all the way to Feb. 8.

  • East Alabama (Zones D and E): The earliest part of the state, with peak rut between Nov. 10 and Dec. 8, according to a WFF biologist.
  • South of U.S. 80 and west of I-65: The latest, with peak breeding around Jan. 25 – Feb. 8.
  • Dallas County example: WFF data put the county's average conception date at Jan. 25.

Because the timing is so spread out, Alabama hunters willing to travel can follow three different peak ruts in one season. For the January and February hunts, read our late-season whitetail strategies.

South Carolina Rut Dates by Region

South Carolina's rut runs earlier than most of the Southeast. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) puts the peak at "the last two weeks of October through the first two weeks of November" for most of the state.

  • Lowcountry and coast: Some rutting starts as early as Oct. 1.
  • Most of the state: Mid-October through mid-November.
  • Upstate mountains: Later, with a peak in late November and activity continuing into December, according to SCDNR's lead deer biologist.

How to Hunt Each Phase of the Southern Rut

  • Pre-rut (rubs and scrapes): Hunt fresh rub lines and scrapes between bedding and food. Trail cameras on mock scrapes will tell you when bucks start cruising in daylight.
  • Seeking and chasing: This is often the best time to see a mature buck on his feet. Sit funnels, creek crossings, and pinch points between doe bedding areas, and stay on stand through midday.
  • Peak breeding: Bucks lock down with a doe, so movement can feel slow. Hunt doe groups and thick cover, and be patient.
  • Post-rut: Bucks are worn down and hungry. Focus on food sources, especially in late-rut areas like the Florida Panhandle and southwest Alabama.

Southern rut hunts can be 85 degrees one morning and 40 the next. Our Southeast hunting apparel tips cover how to layer for it.

Watch the Road, Too

The rut isn't just a hunting season. It's when deer cross roads the most. SCDNR says about 45 percent of deer-vehicle collisions happen in roughly a 60-day period that matches the breeding season. Slow down at dawn and dusk on the drive to and from your stand.

Southeast Rut FAQ

When is the peak rut in Florida?

It depends on the zone. South Florida peaks in July and August, most of north and central Florida in September through November, and the Panhandle from mid-January through February, according to FWC.

When is the rut in Georgia in 2026?

Most Georgia counties see peak deer movement in early to mid-November. Some southeast counties peak in mid to late October, and the southwest corner runs into late December. Check your county on the Georgia DNR rut map.

Why is the Alabama rut so late?

Alabama's deer herd was restocked with deer from different sources decades ago, and those different bloodlines kept their own breeding times. That's why the state has rut activity from mid-November to mid-February.

Does the moon affect the rut?

The state rut maps are built from local herd data, not moon phases. FWC explains that shorter days trigger does to come into estrus, so daylight and local deer genetics set the timing. Weather and moon phase may affect when deer move during the day, so keep hunting the dates that match your area.

What should I hunt after the rut?

Food. Once breeding winds down, bucks focus on refueling. The National Deer Association suggests hunting red oak acorns, green browse, and leftover grain in the post-rut. See our late-season whitetail strategies for more.

Gear Up for Rut Season

Long sits and cold fronts call for gear you'll actually want to wear. Grab The Lord Is My Guide hoodie for frosty mornings, the Stripes & Antlers tee for warm afternoons, or put a Hunt One More® decal on the truck before you head to camp.

Trust the process. Trust the hunt. And when the sun's going down, hunt one more.

Rut timing comes from research published by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources Division, Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division, and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Dates are averages and can shift year to year. Always confirm season dates and regulations with your state wildlife agency before you hunt.
